Family Owned. Locally Owned. Veteran Owned.
on an Old Soul
Have you ever noticed how many life events are shared over a good meal? Birthdays, weddings, retirements, holidays, reunions, date nights, family time…the list could go on for miles. We were sharing a meal ourselves when that realization hit us. Suddenly, we were inspired: what if we could recreate the feeling of going to eat at Grandma’s house on a Sunday after church—delicious, home-cooked, wonderfully Southern food, with a twist? And with that, Southern Eats was born.
Housed in the historic PERcoLATOR building at 435 Monticello Avenue, Southern Eats offers lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch in the heart of downtown Norfolk, Virginia. From weekday happy hours and special weekly events, it’s always a good time to gather and enjoy fresh, fabulous fare with a Southern flair. We offer exclusive in-house wine and champagne, as well as patio and outdoor seating.
At Southern Eats, our entire menu is cooked with love, consideration, and passion for what we do. Fresh, locally-sourced and house-made ingredients are what Southern Eats is all about. From Mom’s Meatloaf and Granny’s Greens to Poppa’s Big Breakfast and Bubba’s Burger, our food is sure to leave you feeling satisfied, and, if we’ve done our jobs right, maybe just a smidge nostalgic.
Meet The Owners
Veteran Brian Shonyo, shown here with Mike of Primo Cigars & Coffee, recently retired after 23 years as a Senior Chief in the Navy. As a young adult, Brian always had a secret desire to own a small pub/eatery. During his career in the military he was able to visit various venues all across the United States and around the world where he has cherished memories of gathering together with his fellow Sailors at a local eatery. He is married to Ginnele Shonyo who is a local business development officer at Old Point National Bank and they have two young boys, Tyler who is 11 and Ryan who is 8. Since Brian retired in January of 2019, he has been looking for the next step and where their next stage in life would take them.
Chef Alan Parker
Alan Parker has over 32 year restaurant and 20 year experience as a chef, owning and operating two of his own restaurants. Alan started off as a bartender at a very young age. He soon learned his love for food after working with chefs Wade Oneal and Anthony Chiperas, Alan wanted to expand on his skill set and started taking classes, even taking a class taught by Sidney Meers at Stove. Alan's love of food brought him back to his middle school age when he learned to cook from his Grandmother (Lois Boyd) and Mother (Alice Parker). Alan see's the dishes he creates as a form of art. He remembers growing up watching his Aunt Aletha, Aunt Odessa, Granny Boyd and Mother Parker in the kitchen preparing a meal for family functions or Sunday meals. Alan loves the comradery and joy that cooking brings him and how it brings people together.
Big Al's Wings
When “The Local” was opening in Norfolk’s Waterside District, the owners went on a hunt for the favorite wings of Norfolk locals. After weeks of comparing entries from throughout Hampton Roads, they chose Alan’s family wing and wing sauce recipes, known as “Big Al’s Wings,” as the local’s favorite.
BEST WINGS IN NORFOLK – “The Local’s Favorite”
Alan always dreamed of sharing his love of food with Hampton Roads and we proudly serve Big Al’s Wings straight from Alan’s kitchen at Southern Eats.
